Who is planning to get the h1n1 vaccine for themselves & their child?

H1N1
MiSSLiNDABABiE asked:

I am afraid of catching the swine flu but, also afraid to get the new h1n1 vaccine. After watching Desiree Jennings story online and reading/watching the news about horrible things going wrong after people have gotten the vaccine…I am definitely paranoid. I have a 8 month old little girl and would want to protect her in every way possible but, I don’t want her/me or my husband to get the vaccine until I know it is 100% safe. Absolutely 100% safe. Does anyone else feel the same way I do?

I have a 10 day old and while she obviously cant have it, I am not getting it either. Some people are saying its fine becuase its made just like the normal flu shot….well I beg to differ. If that were the case they wouldnt be saying “we have every reason to believe it is safe” they would know. Obviously no vaccine is without risk, but they have come right out and said they dont know for sure and thats not a chance I want to take. They way I see it, there are risks to getting it and risks to not getting it. You just need to decide what risk is worse.

just read that story. She received the regular seasonal flu shot, not the H1N1 but still, that is SCARY. I got the flu shot last year for the first time ever and was not feeling well for a few days after. I don’t want to go thru that again. I have family members bugging me to get it though, saying it’s the responsible thing to do. Sick of hearing it. My daughter received the regular flu. Still undecided abt the H1N1. I am not getting either.

    EDIT: a thumbs down….hmm. figures.

Me nor my son will be getting the swine flu vaccine i do not know enough about it it has not been out long enough for me to get him that vaccine. He will however still be getting the regular flu vaccine he got one last year and did not have any side effects from it so i would rather him have it then end up sick.

I will be. I am not concerned in the least, and this lady’s story doesn’t scare me. There are tons of reasons she could’ve gotten dystonia. I don’t even think “dystonia” is actually even a diagnosis, it’s a symptom. I got pregnant after I kissed my husband. Does that mean kissing got me pregnant? Who knows what else she could’ve been doing…it’s like the women who cosleep and roll over on their babies but don’t mention that they had five shots that night.

It’s too late for me. lol
I’m sick right now. :( Not sure if it’s the swine flu though… I don’t feel that sick. Just a headache and body ache.
I think my 3 month old is too young to get the h1n1 shot anyway. I didn’t want any of us to get the shot.

  7. Alyssa is 4 months already! on December 2nd, 2009

Not going to risk it. It is new and I do not want to be their little test rat. How many times have you seen them come out with some new drug and a few months go by and they have ads or commercials saying if you have taken it call this number and you may be able to sue and blah blah blah. So no thank you I will skip the extra drama.

Yes, there have been some negative stories (and rumors) about the vaccine. But we know for sure there have been hundreds of tragedies of people or their babies dying from various strains of flu… somehow they don’t get the same attention.

I’m definitely getting both vaccines for myself and my baby. I know a lot of people are worried about it, but I believe most of these worries are based on misinformation.

The flu vaccine uses a different strain of flu every year; this is normal and the vaccines all have the same safety because of how they’re made. So this one is using a new strain, but that doesn’t make it any more dangerous.

You don’t see anybody saying “Oh no, the seasonal flu vaccine is different from last year and therefore it’s dangerous!” do you? This is the same way flu vaccines have worked for 40 years now.

As for side effects, I also think people worry too much about that. Maybe there is a tiny risk of side effects from the vaccine. But we know there is a very real, very definite risk of side effects from catching the flu — people and babies die of the flu all the time!

I don’t want to risk death for my baby or for the other kids around we might be exposing to the flu, so we’re getting the shot. How would I feel if my baby died of the flu — or another baby we know — because we didn’t want the shot?

To sum up: If you’re making an evidence-based decision and comparing percentages, your baby is much more likely to die from the flu than to suffer any side effects from a vaccine.

I know this answer will get negative ratings, but I just don’t understand why people are more afraid of the vaccine than of the various strains of the flu (which we KNOW kills 800+ people every week.)

it’s a hard decision! nothing is 100% safe. taking advil is not 100% safe. sitting in your house isn’t 100% safe. I have decided that I am getting the vaccine for my son because in my mind, the flu is worse than the risk of getting the shot. if you’re going to watch things about adverse reactions to the vaccine, you should watch things about people dying from the actual flu…there’s 2 sides to every story and you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t really, unfortunately. but for us, we’re going to get it. several people that I have talked to who have had the flu themselves or whose children have had it said they WOULD vaccinate against it if they were given the chance again. I don’t want my 9 month old to have a fever of 103 for a week…they made this shot exactly like they have made regular flu shots for years and years — they just replaced the virus with the H1N1 virus.

oh and for the record, I will get it if I can and if it’s available to my son at his dr’s appointment next week, we’ll get it for him. if it’s not for some reason, that’s fine with me too.

We are all getting it in my house, my son got his 1st dose in his nose he ran slight fever that’s all and the shot isn’t available for my 8 month old yet but I want her to be protected from it. I believe benefits outweigh the risks in certain cases my kids are in the at risk age group for H1N1, that’s what they will get, I will not get them a seasonal flu vaccine as they are perfectly healthy and it isn’t necessary. I may consider it for my baby though.

  12. DisgruntledCynic on December 13th, 2009

I’ve already had mine, and my son will be receiving it as soon as he’s old enough, he’s getting some immunity now because we ****** feed exclusively. I don’t get all this hype; more people suffer horrible accidents related to driving, flying in airplanes and eating peanuts than suffer any ill effects from the flu vaccine. But I don’t know of any peanut that could save somebodies life; go with the statistical reality and get the shot. If you waited for EVERYTHING to be proven 100% safe you wouldn’t use a cell phone, microwave, drink alcohol, drink from aluminum soda cans, walk on a sidewalk, go outside without sunblock on, enter any body of water deeper than 1/2 inch without a life jacket, etc. since all of these things have yet to be proven totally safe.

  13. pisceswomanem on December 13th, 2009

I am getting the vaccine. My daughter is 3 1/2 months. I want to try to protect her in any way that I can, and I feel this is a small chance that I am taking with my health. I’ve talked with a couple of doctors about it, and I feel that the best thing for me to do as a mom of an infant is to get the shot.

  14. I LOVE my Thumbs-Down Fairy!!! on December 17th, 2009

No vaccination or medication is 100% safe. There are potential side effects to virutally every single vaccination and medication in existence. If that is the case, then definitely do not get the vaccination.

“Who isplanning to get the h1n1 vaccine for themselves and their child?”. I am. My 2 and a half year old and myself had it last week. My daughter is asthmatic and we also have a 4 month old, so we are in the priority group. I personally know an 11 year old girl who dies from H1N1. Yes, I know it is extremely rare but if anything happened to my daughter and I could have prevented it and didn’t, I would never forgive myself.

OK- it turns out that many doctors are now questioning Desiree Jenning’s dystonia and it is now thought that most likely her illness did not result from the flu shot but is psychogenic in nature.

On to the H1N1 – Nothing is absolutely safe – even giving your child tylenol can cause bad reactions in some children. Does that mean that you will never give your child Tylenol based on that? Doubtful.

I went back and forth on this issue and whether or not to get the shot for my sons. Then I read an article that presented some information that I hadn’t thought of. The flu vaccine is NOT new. The process is exactly the same as the regular flu vaccine – what differs is the inactivated h1n1 virus This vaccine contains the killed H1N1 virus.

So having said all of that – I will get my family vaccinated. We are considered at risk because of asthma. Even if that wasn’t the case, I would anyway.

Personally I understand why people do not want to get the shot but do not condemn me for doing it.
